Voice of Truth - Prayer

It has been a busy time for me lately. I have noticed when I am busy, I come up with a bunch of people and things to pray for. I have noticed my prayers becoming God I need this and God help out in this area. We are supposed to bring our prayers before God. Although, God is not our personal prayer ATM. "If I put in a few good works or acts of service, God should answer my prayers as I see fit". This is not how it works. Going through the Downpour study has made me look at God's holiness in a new way. This has made me think about my prayers in a new way. When was the last time you came to God in prayer and asked for nothing? When was the last time you came to God only proclaiming His holiness? It has been a long time for me.

Isaiah 6:3 - "And one called out to another and said, "Holy, Holy, Holy, is the LORD of hosts, The whole earth is full of His glory.""

Psalm 29:2 - "Ascribe to the LORD the glory due to His name; Worship the LORD in holy array."

Psalm 96:9 - "Worship the LORD in holy attire; Tremble before Him, all the earth."

Revelation 15:4 - "Who will not fear, O Lord, and glorify Your name? For You alone are holy; For ALL THE NATIONS WILL COME AND WORSHIP BEFORE YOU, FOR YOUR RIGHTEOUS ACTS HAVE BEEN REVEALED."

This is just a tiny number of verses describing God's holiness. Take the time to look some of them up. I am going to set some time aside today just to honor God in prayer. I will not use any of this time to ask for anything. Will you make the same commitment?

It had been a long time since I spent a whole prayer time focusing on all that God has done for me and not asking for anything but lifting praise to him.

The Downpour study has made it pretty clear that we need to think carefully about how we talk to a holy God. We need to approach God carefully and humbly because of who He is not with a cheesy, checklist type of "I want" or "I need" prayer. We need to stay humble, pure and broken and pray for revival in ourselves, our church, and the world.

James McDonald listed 4 types of prayer in a recent broadcast:

Kindergarten prayer - Lord give me and I want this & I want that.

High School prayer - Lord give me what I deserve -- what you promised in your Word.

College prayer - Lord, please do NOT give me what I deserve!

Graduate school prayer - Lord, I deserve NOTHING! Do I get to draw another breath - live another day? Only by God's unmerited grace and mercy!

The challenge is to make this part of our daily prayer life, to ask God to forgive us for our selfish me, my, I, what I need today prayers and begin to pray for the Come Kingdom of God, Thy will be done, hallowed be Thy name prayers and pray about the purposes of God in the world.

Linda, thanks for the post. Good to see a lady on here. I agree with your post. Unfortunately, I pray to many High School prayers.
